There’s no strict method or set of tools to use in every artwork for every artist. Yet, it is a feeling that all aspects within an artwork work together in balance – and, therefore, an important principle to use. Unity is more like a concept than a set of rules that can be checked off. You can learn more about the other principles and elements of art in the linked articles below.Īs a general rule, to achieve unity in art, you could use one of the 5 ways to express unity in art: simplicity, proximity, repetition, alignment and continuation.Īlso, you must train your artistic intuition.

Next, let’s talk about how to achieve unity. Unified composition thatis too similar may seem boring to the viewer, and to avoid that, variety is added to the artwork.Īfter all, unity is a tool in the hands of the artist and can be achieved through subtle details or large noticeable visual elements. Sometimes, the lack of unity in the artwork can be used to convey a different message: to instill a feeling of unease or incompleteness. It may not necessarily apply to the entire work but to one or a few different visual elements. Unity is the reason why viewers perceive an artwork as a complete one piece and not its separate parts. The Unity Principle is achieved when other principles of art have been applied together properly. It represents their sum, and its simple definition can be explained as – the arrangement of different pieces that create a balanced and complete whole. In the future, each principle will be explored further with its own blog post.Unity in art is meant to create a sense of order and consistency, as well as give the compositional components an appearance of belonging together. The image below does a great job of that using line and tone. The goal of creating movement is to lead the viewer’s eye all around the photo and land on the focal point. Movement is one of the simpler principles to learn I actually used it a lot when discussing the Elements of Art. By differing the kinds of shells, I’ve created variety that still maintains unity in that they are all shells. The image on the right has variety in each of the shells. Variety is exactly what it sounds like, having variety in your elements! The image on the left has variety by combining a sunset sky, the bridge, and the middle ground of the trees. The rocks in the lower part of the frame appear huge, giving them more importance. This next image gives importance by lens distortion and placement. The above image was done through composition. In this image, the size of the sky was dramatically greater than the ground, giving it importance. Finding an image that uses this purposefully was difficult. Proportion is using the size of an object to give it more or less importance. You can create contrast in an image by using complementary colors or differences in light and dark. It is similar to adding contrast to an image overall, but this is done by using the elements. This image could be separated in to each part as its own piece, but together they become a unified composition.Ĭontrast is easy. Unity is taking the parts of a piece of art and unifying them in to something better as a whole. This will cause the viewer’s eye to move around to each element. Pattern or rhythm is simply repeating an element in such a manner. This is one of the most difficult principles to grasp. The white water is also simple and creates a “harmony”. The orange and yellow leaves are all around the frame, bringing it together in a simple way. I chose this image to represent a good harmony. This happens in art by using similar elements through out a piece that bring it together in a “pleasing” way. The dictionary definition of harmony is “a consistent, orderly, or pleasing arrangement of parts congruity”. Below are an example of both poor and good balance. Balance can also be achieved by asymmetry or radial arrangement. Balanceīalance is arranging the elements in a piece so that there is an equality from one side to the other. While these apply to any media in art, I will be using them specifically for photography. The principles of design take the Elements of Art and organize them in a single piece of art.
